Kids:

A few hours ago, I landed in Los Angeles, turned on my phone, and confirmed what you already know. Sony Pictures Television is replacing me as showrunner on Community, with two seasoned fellows that I’m sure are quite nice - actually, I have it on good authority they’re quite nice, because…

Find My iPhone

Too many times I’ve had my friends complain about losing or not being able to find their iPhones. Most of the time it the morning after a night out and they’ve either left their phone at a bar, at someone else’s apartment or, in the worst scenario, stolen.

Did you know that your iPhone (and iPad and Mac) have a feature built in to the operating system and all you have to do is switch it on. Yes, you’re all idiots if you don’t turn it on.

1. If you’ve recently bought an iPhone or upgraded to iOS 5, I’m sure you’re aware of iCloud. Please turn on iCloud and use some of the features and settings included with it. Here’s a quick guide on how to set up iCloud. Sign in with your Apple ID, the same one you use to purchase music and apps on iTunes and the App Store.

If you’re not sure if you turned on iCloud when you first set up your phone, tap the Settings icon on the Home screen and select iCloud.

2. At the bottom of the iCloud settings, toggle on Find My iPhone. That’s it, you’re all set.

If you ever are in a situation where you can’t find your iPhone, even in your own home, or you fear that someone stole it, it’s easy to track it.

To track your iPhone, go to iCloud.com. Sign in again with the same Apple ID that you signed in with on your phone in the iCloud settings.

Click on Find My iPhone and you’ll see a map with all your Apple devices with iCloud listed on the left-hand side.

Once you select your iPhone (or any device), you’re able to choose from a few options:

Play a sound or message will play a loud sonar-type noise from your iPhone so that you can find it in your couch or at a bar. You can also type in a personalized message, letting anyone who found your phone that you’re on your way to pick it up or to call you at another number to arrange pickup.

If you fear that someone may have your iPhone and you don’t want them to have access to your phone, look at your texts, etc., you can lock your phone remotely. And if you’re fairly certain that someone stole your phone, you can remotely wipe it and all of your settings, files and apps will be erased and the phone will be restored to factory settings. Only use the remote wipe option as a last option (it’s OK if you find it later, you have a backup of your iPhone on iCloud or your computer.)

What about if my phone battery has completely run out or it’s not on? Your device will send you an email as soon as it makes an Internet connection. In the message you’ll be able to click a link to take you to a map of where your device was last located.

Find My iPhone is an invaluable and easy way to locate your phone if you ever lose it or it is stolen. Make sure you’re using it, and iCloud, now. If you have any questions, let me know. Go set it up.

Some Nights

Album of the year.

The Super Bowl ads this year weren’t all that great, especially from the big players. There was a lot of disappointment from Volkswagen with their followup to last year’s “The Force” commercial, “The Dog Strikes Back.” What would have put it over the top was if Darth Vader at the end was the same kid as last year force choking the cantina patron.

Last year VW ran “The Force.” This year it’s just “Forced.”

The other huge disappointments were Honda’s “Matthew’s Day Off” and E*TRADE’s “Fatherhood” ads. Anheuser Busch’s usually stellar clydesdale and prohibition ads were forgettable but the simple Bud Light Platinum spots seemed to work, or confirm a lot of people’s weekend purchases, especially on Twitter.

With that being said, here are the three commercials I thought were the best. Surprisingly, two of them are from technology companies that I’m really not fond of. The other one really wants me to start buying American.

Best Buy - “Phone Innovators”

The ending with the creators of Words With Friends, poking fun at the Alec Baldwin situation, was very clever.

Some commenters left very insightful comments about how most stories are written by a man (so what?). Others linked me to stories about males and princes being rescued (thank you!)

Foursquare may be my favorite social network (sorry Path). I was talking with an ‘06 Miami alum the other night in Oxford and told him that I thought Foursquare was the most underrated social network. I believe things are going to change.

Things for Foursquare are going to change because Foursquare continually adds new features that users welcome with open arms. Unlike Facebook, and more recently Twitter, when Foursquare adds a new feature, bloggers and users alike rave about it; we can’t fathom how we interacted before without them! Foursquare’s latest feature may be its best yet.

Foursquare Radar and Explore are both pretty great features, Radar pinging users using the app on iOS and Android about places they may be interested in based on their location using GPS. BRILLIANT! It works really well, especially walking around neighborhoods in downtown Chicago when your first restaurant choice has a two-and-a-half hour wait for a table. Explore is neat, allowing you to find something interesting anywhere in the world with a few keywords. Those are both really great features but what users really want are menus.

Foursquare is bringing restaurant menus to its service.

We’ve partnered with the awesome start-up SinglePlatform to share over 13,000,000 menu items at almost 250,000 restaurants in major U.S. cities, with more on the way.

How awesome is that?

Foursquare is no longer the check-in app you use every once-in-awhile. Foursquare is now the go-to app to learn what types of interesting places are around you (even without having to open the app and search), what you can do in those places and what you can order. It also lets you see where your friends are and adds an element of gaming to the mix.

People often wonder why I use Foursquare instead of Yelp to look up new kinds of restaurants/bars/etc. to try out. I don’t trust Yelp. I’ve read too many stories or heard from friends who work for companies that are paid money to write positive reviews on Yelp. I trust Foursquare users; they’re actually using the service and writing down tips because they had a positive, or negative, experience. And even though my friends make fun of me for leaving tips on Foursquare, I feel like I’m paying it forward.

Menus make Foursquare one of the most well-rounded social networks around and one I hope more and more people will continue to sign up for and use regularly. Dens and his team are continuing to push the way we think of a social network. There’s a reason why Facebook has shut down its check-in feature.

Foursquare is not about letting everyone know where you are. It’s about building a community, sharing that community with others and exploring the things around you.

Foursquare helps you experience your world.

Please, download the Foursquare app now, on iPhone or Android, or check out the website. Add me as a friend and let’s explore one of the best social networks available.

Yes. During the blackout, Wikipedia is accessible on mobile devices and smart phones. You can also view Wikipedia normally by disabling JavaScript in your browser, as explained on this Technical FAQ page. Our purpose here isn’t to make it completely impossible for people to read Wikipedia, and it’s okay for you to circumvent the blackout.

Twitter users beginning a tweet with “@username” when it’s not a reply or only directed at that one person and that person’s followers. When you begin a tweet with “@username” only that person and people that follow you and that person can see it. If you want everyone to see it, include a space, _ or . in front of @username.

Private Twitter accounts; what’s the point?

People who think Twitter is used for telling people where you are or what you’re doing. People don’t tweet, “I’m pooping” or “cooking dinner” anymore. That was five years ago. Twitter is a great place to connect with people with similar interests, celebrities and to receive instant news.

Instagram users who post pictures from weeks/months ago. “Insta” is in the name, as in instant.

Did I forget anything?

Voice and Motion-Controlled TVs Suck

Motion control can be cool, but it only lasts for so long.

I played Kinect for an extended period of time, outside of the demo at Best Buy, this past Friday. It was pretty neat for the first hour or so and then it became pretty boring, just like the Wii before it. The sensor detects your motion fairly well, much better than I expected.

The problem I face when deciding whether or not to buy a Kinect for myself is can I justify the price for something I won’t use too often to play video games? Microsoft tried to answer that question by integrating Kinect’s voice and motion-sensing capabilities into the Xbox 360’s dashboard.

I can sit on the couch and say, “Xbox, play ‘How I Met Your Mother’” and it will go to the Netflix app and begin streaming HIMYM. If I tell it, “Xbox, search for CES coverage”, CES results on Bing will show up. That’s kind of cool and very sci-fi, futuristic-like. It’s also lazy and slow.

I don’t know about you but I like using a remote control. Now, not every remote is great; some have too many buttons, can’t control all your devices, or are unresponsive half the time (Apple TV remote). Remotes, in their most basic form, are easy to use and natural. Remotes are more natural, in controlling a television or set-top box, than voice or gestures.

With the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) occurring this week in Las Vegas, TV manufacturers, like Samsung, LG and Panasonic, are introducing displays with voice and facial recognition. They have Kinect-like motion control, gesture recognition and voice commands. Now you can record “The Bachelor” without having to navigate any menus or program listing guides.

I don’t know about you but I enjoy flipping stations at every commercial break or for hours on end on Saturday when there is nothing on. I don’t want to be waving to my TV every few seconds changing stations. I don’t want to be yelling at my cable box to go to the previous channel or telling my Vizio to turn the volume up… no down… down one more… up three…

Are companies like Samsung really implementing these features in their new television sets because people want to use them or because analysts stir up the pot with rumors that Apple is working on a real Apple TV with Siri-like features? How many people still use Siri on their iPhone?

Gesture recognition and voice control is cool with videogames, for an hour or so, but they don’t fit with general TV watching. TV manufacturers should invest in making their menus and remotes smarter and easier rather than dumping funds into controls a majority of consumers probably won’t use.

Besides, people still watch TV on their televisions?

I Need Some Sharing Advice

I’m having a hard time trying to find the right medium to share all the photos, videos and links I, or someone else might, find interesting.

I post a lot of links to various things on Twitter, but I often find it gets lost and not all my friends have an account. If I think more people would enjoy what I found, I post it on Facebook because I know there’s a better chance of all my friends seeing it (and with lists I can direct certain posts to certain groups of people).

The problem is I begin to feel bad about how often I post, especially on Facebook. At times I feel I’m posting too much on Twitter but that’s really what Twitter’s medium has become: links and breaking news. If one of my followers feels I post too often or the posts are not relevant to them, they can unfollow my tweets fairly invisibly. With Facebook, your “followers” are more often than not your closer friends. If one of your friends unfriends you, it’s more noticeable and the reaction is quite different.

I don’t care if you think I post too often on Twitter. I do care if you feel I post too much on Facebook.

That brings me to another problem. I’ve contemplated numerous times about posting all the links and whatnot on this blog. My main concern is that when I write actual posts, such as the dating one, the Jeremy Roenick one or the Path one, I’d rather have those stand out and be easy to find than be cluttered up and lost among all the other links and videos.

That’s especially important to me during my current job search where I direct interviewers, prospects and others to this website to demonstrate some of my work.

So what this post really boils down to is, I need some advice. I can continue to just post all links to Twitter and include certain ones on Facebook just like I have been doing. I can begin to post links to my blog (through Tumblr) and have the ability to write descriptions, comments and reactions, with links going out to Twitter and Facebook. The last option is I can create a new blog, like Got A Sister, as a more traditional Tumblr page, or join a different site like Pinterest.

I’d like to know what you think of my posting style(s) and hear your ideas. What do you think I should do?

Start to finish of a blog post (Taken with instagram)

Start to finish of a blog post (Taken with instagram)

The Best App of 2011

The best app I downloaded this year was not Rdio. It wasn’t Instagram, Tweetbot, Foursquare or Messenger. All of those apps I use on a daily basis and are prominently displayed on my iPhone’s home screen. It also wasn’t Zaarly, Flipboard, Soundtracking or Hipstamatic Disposable (which I wrote about). Those are all pretty great apps too.

I thought about declaring Jetpack Joyride the best app I downloaded this year, as it was the only game I played throughout the summer. However, it is the best game I downloaded this year.

No, the best app I downloaded this year is one that a very few people are using and one that doesn’t get as much attention as others (like Instagram). It’s an app that’s been around for over a year but recently launched version 2.0.

It’s Path.

Path isn’t revolutionary or even evolutionary. In reality, and in all honesty, it is devolutionary. And that’s what makes it great.

Path doesn’t do anything different than Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, Soundtracking and others. You can post photos, let friends know where you are, tell them what song you’re currently playing on repeat and post random thoughts. Nothing special, right?

So, why should anyone sign up or care about yet another social network?

Twitter is great at what it does. You can connect to celebrities, brands, friends and news outlets. It allows me to learn new things, stay more up-to-date than most of the people I know and post the ridiculous links and pictures I find. The problem is it can become overwhelming. If I don’t check Twitter for more than an hour or more, I miss hundreds of tweets and retweets. I’m only following 300 or so people. Granted, a lot of those people are tech industry folks who are on Twitter all day, but more often than not I just give up on catching up, however much I feel like I’ll be missing out on something. When the news broke Sunday evening that North Korean leader Kim Jong-il had died, more than 30 tweets had clogged my feed within two minutes. The posts, retweets and jokes continue to come in, 24 hours after the first breaking tweet.

It was all the same news. Not a single one was from one of my actual friends.

Facebook is also great at what it does. It’s also pretty much mandatory (even though the recent trend is to never sign up for Facebook or deactivate). Facebook Messages are a better alternative to email, Chat is the new AIM and Events are better than any evite. I won’t go too much in to Facebook because we know what it does well and complain about what it doesn’t do well. The few things I will say though is, because Facebook was the first one (still relevant) on the block, the way we use it has changed. The updates my friends and I post has evolved (and so has Facebook’s Status Bar). Remember when it asked, “What are you doing?” or when all updates began, “Will Longhini is…?” Twitter eventually became popular and those who posted too often were told “This isn’t Twitter. Stop posting!” And so we did.

This is where Path comes in.

The fundamental difference between all the other social apps and Path, besides how wonderful the app is designed and looks, is how limited it is.

Path isn’t limited in its features. As I described earlier, it combines just about the best of all the other social networks out there and does them well. I have 315 “friends” on Facebook and just over 300 followers and people I follow on Twitter. Path limits your network to only 150 people. That isn’t a bad thing.

Path describes itself as “The smart journal that helps you share life with the ones you love.”

With a 150 person cap, the idea is a Path user will be more reluctant to share everything and anything. Besides sharing intimate photos and thoughts, there’s even an option to let your friends know you’re going to sleep or that you’re awake. It’s not an example when you go into “Thought,” it’s a separate option.

150 people doesn’t seem like a lot, especially compared to the hundreds of friends and followers people have on both Facebook and Twitter, but I only have two actual, real-life friends currently using Path.

It’s a frustrating problem I run into all the time. I am genuinely interested in the way technology and gadgets can shape the world we live in, how we consume our surroundings and how we stay connected to one another.

The problem is, most of my friends are happy and content with the usual suspects of Facebook and Twitter. That’s fine, but there is much more out there. It’s amazing that Instagram (Path has filters too!) and Foursquare (Path has check-ins and “With” mentions) have taken off like they have with my friends. I suspect Hipstamatic Disposable will not and I hope Path doesn’t share that same fate.

Download Path now from the App Store or Android Market and find out what my favorite smelling spice is.

With the influx of apps that allow you to add old imaging effects to really nice iPhone photos, the time is right for a new take on the craze. Adding old lens types to photos is fun, when you can pick and choose what the end result will look like, but what if you couldn’t see what the print will look like?

Synthetic, the makers of the popular Hipstamatic app (and beat Instagram to market), just released the Hipstamatic Disposable Series app on the App Store.

What makes the new app different from Instagram, Hipstamatic and the like is that users won’t be able to see the photos they took until the entire 24 image roll has been exposed. Add on top of that, D-Series is meant for collaboration among friends.

Friends join groups to take a 24-exposure roll and once all the photos are taken, a push notification is sent to all the members of the group and the photos are downloaded to everyone’s phones. Again, members won’t be able to see the photos everyone else in the group has taken until the roll is finished.

iPhones and other digital cameras are great because you can instantly see what you shot and how the photo turned out. The negative is photographers are always trying to take the perfect shot. The D-Series app tries to capture the fun and often spontaneous nature of the disposable camera.

This may just be my favorite new app and I can’t wait to see what kind of photos my friends and I take. I won’t be able to find out until the 24th photo has been shot. Download on the App Store now.

When I used to come home from Miami during Thanksgiving I always ran a “Software Update” on my parents’ computer. Every once in awhile, now that I’m home, I still run the OS update as well as make sure the browser is updated as well.

With a lot of people returning home for the holiday, take the time to update your family’s browser, applications and operating system. The article mentions that you shouldn’t switch “brands” or browsers on your parents (siblings, grandparents, friends, etc.). I agree, but talk to them about switching from Internet Explorer. If you really want to switch their browser, here’s a Lifehacker article about how to do it on the sly.

Lastly, if you’re still using Internet Exploder, please switch to Firefox or Chrome. You deserve something nice while you’re doing your Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping online.

Facebook Messages > Email

Facebook Messages is superior to email.

You don’t need to know someone’s email address. The people you want to message are already your friends on Facebook. There’s no inputting someone’s address into contacts to make it easier. Their just there.

There’s no need for subject lines.

All messages are automatically archived. They’re all threaded. EVERYTHING IS THERE. I know Gmail and others, like Sparrow and Mail.app, also have these features, but it’s not the same.

With email, sometimes you reply to an email. Other times you create a new message from scratch. Messages and conversations are all over the place. Facebook Messages is all one thread.

You can share pictures, links and “hellos”. Same with email. But it’s easier.

Photos in emails rarely are inline, like Facebook’s messages, and often you have to download the attachment. With Facebook, the picture is just there.

Email doesn’t even have an advantage with other attachment file types like .doc, .mp3 and others. Facebook allows you to upload and send any type of file type, just like email.

I complained earlier about the Facebook iPhone app, but the Facebook Messenger app is pretty great. It’s not perfect, but really good. Maybe that’s because it was originally Beluga, a group messaging app (and company) that Facebook acquired. If you have an iPhone, download it here. Those push notifications actually show up, and maybe that’s why I don’t receive notifications for messages from the Facebook app.

From now on, if you’re going to send me an email PLEASE send me a Facebook message instead.

I’m much more likely to look and reply to it. Plus it’s more fun. We’re already on Facebook, so let’s condense all the different ways we communicate with one another.

[Updated]

TechCrunch is reporting that Facebook is going to release a standalone Facebook Messenger for Windows application, which they are testing now.

People often ask me, “Why don’t you have a case for...

People often ask me, “Why don’t you have a case for your iPhone? Aren’t you afraid of cracking it?”

I’m not.

I’ve dropped my phone quite a few times and nothing happens to it. Yes, I do freak out a bit and meticulously check it to see if there are any blemishes, cracks or structural damage.

I’ve also dropped my phone a few times and it gets a little scratched on the back or sides, but the screen is the fine.

And yes, there have been two times where I have accidentally dropped or thrown my phone and the screen has shattered. Both times the phone has still worked, and both times the Apple Store replaced my broken phone with a new phone. No questions asked.

I don’t put my phone in a case because I don’t want to cover up my gadget. The iPhone is a sleek and beautiful piece of technology. It is arguably the “sexiest” phone on the market (the Galaxy Nexus is “hot” too), so why cover it up? I wouldn’t tell a sexy women not wearing clothes to put clothes on.

I don’t put my phone in a case because I don’t want the bulkiness of a cover taking up room in my jean’s front left pocket. The iPhone fits pretty perfectly in my pants and is easy to remove when I want it to, and more importantly, when I need it to. A case, and even a bumper, inhibits this.

I do, however, understand why some people (mostly females) want a cover.

It adds some personality and can help differentiate one iPhone from all the others

Women throw their phones in a giant purse with keys, wallets, and other things they really don’t need to carry around.

The problem is, a case protects your iPhone’s backside (which is also glass). The thing you should be protecting is the actual screen, you know, on the front of the phone.

If you want to get a case for style, that’s fine. I understand. It’s like changing the homescreen wallpaper to make the iPhone your own. You’re not buying a case for protection because the cases from Incase, Speck and Kate Spade will not protect your phone from a fall.

If you want protection for your iPhone when it’s in a purse or another bag, you should be purchasing a screen film protector that protects the screen from key scratches and the like.

And when you do purchase the film protector, please let the employees at the Apple Store install it for you. It’s hard to align and you won’t be able to eliminate all the air bubbles. Apple Store employees seem to be trained, or just experienced, in installing the film.

This is a great example of why I don’t like the Facebook...

This is a great example of why I don’t like the Facebook iPhone app:

The picture does not show up full size. Why does the photo fill the screen at the beginning and then shrink? (It’s not because it’s a screenshot. It happens to full iPhone and point-and-shoot camera photos as well.)

The comments and Likes are not for this particular photo. If you click the “Show Comments” button, it brings up comments for a random photo in that particular album.

This photo is not the 1st of 57 in the particular album. Often in the News Feed I will click someone’s photo and it brings me to a random photo in their particular album, NOT the photo I clicked.

When I go to “Like” a particular comment on the photo, sometimes the Like option is available, other times it is not. It seems to be random if you are able to Like or not Like.

Let me clarify. I think the app is much better than previous versions, and it replicates a lot more of what the desktop version is able to do. However, it seems to be getting worse and worse the more I use it.

I don’t think I’m being too critical of Facebook. As you’ve seen before, I particularly like all of Facebook’s new features and redesigns while a lot of others complain (with nothing to really complain about). I guess I just expect a bit more because the desktop version is good. The Facebook iOS app is the most downloaded app in the history of the App Store, so I think Facebook would want to make it the best it can.

Facebook knows that more and more people are accessing Facebook on their phones and tablets. I often prefer the Facebook experience on the iPhone because it gets to the point. I find myself more and more frustrated with the mobile experience and liking the desktop version. Hopefully they can turn it around.

PS, does anyone else not receive a push notification when they receive a Facebook message?
